To mark the 55th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, the Chinese Embassy in India and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) jointly hosted the China Week in the university.

On September 20, the China Week was solemnly inaugurated in the Committee Room of the School of Language, Literature & Culture Studies (SLLCS), JNU. Mr. Zheng Qingdian, Charge d'Affaires of the Chinese Embassy in India, Prof. Balveer Arora, Rector, JNU, Prof. H. C. Pande, Dean of SLLCS, and Dr. Sabree Mitra, Chairperson of the Center of Chinese and South East Asian Studies, SLLCS were present at the inauguration and delivered heart-warming speeches. Besides them, about 150 people also attended the inauguration including scholars of China studies, heads of concerned schools and departments of JNU, teachers and students of SLLCS, friends from Indian culture and press circles.

Mr. Zheng Qingdian briefed the guests on the series of important achievements made by China in more than 20 years since the beginning of reform and opening-up. He pointed out that the China Week would help the Indian people understand better China's history and culture, give further impetus to the bilateral exchanges and improve the friendship between the two peoples.

Prof. Balveer Arora and Prof. H. C. Pande stressed in their speeches that India and China, both developing countries with ancient civilizations, were confronted with common opportunities and challenges. The two countries should strengthen exchanges and cooperation in the fields of society, economy and culture. The China Week provided a good opportunity for the Indian people to acquaint themselves with China.

The China Week would last until September 25. Photographic exhibition titled Rediscover China would be held to show the great achievements of China since the reform and opening-up. Documentaries and feature films, including China into the New Millennium, the Colorful Seasons in China, China Symphonic Portrayal, Hero, Genghis Khan, Not One Less would be shown to give an account of China's development and its people's life in an all-round way.
